The 32BJ Health Fund Centers of Excellence (COE) for Surgery

Starting January 1, 2025, the 32BJ Health Fund is partnering with Lantern Surgery Care to offer you and your family many more types of surgeries at no cost to you.

Lantern’s nationwide network of surgeons are world-class specialists who offer you excellent care with successful results so that you can enjoy life more fully. The Health Fund selected Lantern as its COE partner because of their expertise in managing a wide range of surgeries.

The 32BJ Health Fund COE for Surgery program covers two categories of surgery

Mandatory surgeries with a $0 copay Voluntary surgeries with a $0 copay

The following surgeries must be performed by a Lantern surgeon to be covered.

If you go to a different doctor, you will have to pay the entire cost of your surgery.

If you go to a Lantern surgeon for a voluntary procedure, you will have a $0 copay for surgery.

Alternatively, if you were to go to an Anthem surgeon and have your procedure at a preferred, in-network hospital, you would pay a $100 copay.

  • Bariatric
  • Joint replacement (expanded to include hip, knee, ankle, and shoulder surgeries)
  • Spine
  • Cardiac
  • Ear, nose, and throat
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Gynecological
  • Orthopedic (other than joint replacement)
  • And many general surgeries
  • Nonsurgical injections for spine and orthopedic pain management (like a lumbar epidural steroid)

How does it work?

  • You must use a Lantern Surgery Care doctor for a mandatory surgery if you live within 50 miles of a Lantern surgeon, or you will have to pay the entire cost of your surgery
  • Both mandatory and voluntary surgeries have a $0 copay with Lantern Surgery Care
  • If your Lantern doctor recommends that you have physical therapy (PT), you can receive unlimited $0 virtual PT appointments before and after surgery for up to 12 months with a Hinge physical therapist
  • You can also receive $0 in-person PT with an Anthem physical therapist for up to 50 days following a mandatory surgery. After the 50 days, the in-person PT copay is $40. Your health plan covers a maximum of 30 in-person PT visits in a calendar year, and preauthorization is required

Note: You pay your regular copays for appointments with an Anthem doctor before and after surgery.
